3 bidders in contest to host 2017 Alpine worlds (AP)

OBERHOFEN, Switzerland (AP)—Switzerland’s St. Moritz and Italian resort Cortina d’Ampezzo are making a third straight bid to host Alpine skiing’s world championships.

The International Ski Federation says bidding for the 2017 event is a three-way contest with Are in Sweden.

St. Moritz and Cortina lost to Austria’s Schladming for 2013 rights and Vail-Beaver Creek in the United States for 2015. Are hosted in 2007.

The FIS ruling council will select the winner in June 2012, at its congress in Gangwon Province, South Korea.

Four bidders are competing for the 2017 Nordic worlds: Lahti, Finland; Oberstdorf, Germany; Planica, Slovakia; and Zakopane, Poland.

Spain’s Sierra Nevada is the only bidder for the 2017 freestyle and snowboard worlds.
