Former ski jumper Adam Malysz crashes car (AP)

WARSAW, Poland (AP)—Former ski jump champion Adam Malysz was bruised in a car crash shortly after setting a speed record in Poland.

Malysz was driving at about 180 kph (111 mph) at a test range near the western town of Zagan on Thursday when his SUV skidded and landed on its roof. Malysz got out on his own and was smiling, according to TVN24 television.

He had earlier beaten the track’s speed record of 176 kph (109 mph).

The 33-year-old Malysz is one of Poland’s best loved athletes. He won World Cup ski jump titles in 2001, ’03 and ’07 and also finished with four gold medals and a bronze at the world championships and three silvers at the Olympics.

After retiring last winter, he turned to car racing.
