With James Hook impressing in the No 10 jersey for Wales against Scotland in the second weekend of the 2011 RBS 6 Nations the long-standing incumbent of that position, Stephen Jones, has a fight on his hands to keep his place.

Yet the 33-year-old, set to win his 99th test cap against Ireland in the fourth set of fixtures insists he does not feel this burden of pressure and rather welcomes the challenge for the good of Wales’ prospects in the championship.

“I don’t think as a player you ever need a kick up the backside,” said the Scarlets stand-off.

“My perspective for my career is all about enjoyment and I thoroughly enjoy playing and being part of the Welsh setup.

“The working environment’s good and I just really enjoy it. You just try to make the most of every opportunity you get.”

The tactical kicker said he was aware Hook offers an alternative to his style of play with more direct running and greater pace but knows he still has a major role to play in the team, whether selected to start or coming off the bench.

“I think it is horses for courses really,” he said. “It depends on what style the management want to play and what team we’re playing against.

“It helps that we’ve got options and we try to make the most of these.”

As for who he expects to be chosen in the coveted No 10 shirt, Jones refused to be drawn.

“I’m not sure. It’s whatever the coaches think,” he said, adding: “He’s a very talented individual and that’s great. It’s for our benefit.”

The Millennium Stadium contest with Declan Kidney’s Ireland looks likely to decide who is still competing for the trophy come the final round of fixtures and Jones knows the strength in depth of Warren Gatland’s squad will prove crucial.

“If you look at our squad, even though we’ve got quite a few youngsters, we’ve actually got a lot of experience as well, which is helpful.”

“It’s all about making the most of our opportunities.

“As we showed after our first game we bounced back really well so we look forward to the remaining two games.”

Stephen Jones were speaking on behalf of the Wales Rugby Team at a unique sweat session to launch Powerade ION4, a new sports drink which helps replenish four of the minerals lost in sweat. For more information visit www.poweradegb.com
