Mark Ryan ![]() Agony after the ecstasy: Goalscorer Rooney holds his injured ankle Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Wayne Rooney’s performance as ‘out of this world’ after Manchester United’s troubled striker scored his first goal from open play for nine months in his side’s 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion. But the United manager’s extravagant praise for Rooney’s first strike in 277 days and after more than 1,417 minutes of football glossed over what had been an ordinary performance. And it smacked of an attempt to lift the confidence of a man who has endured a turbulent time on and off the field since he was scoring goals for fun last season. Sir Alex said: ‘I thought Wayne Rooney was absolutely out of this world today. He was fantastic, it was an unbelievable performance. He drove us on and one time he beat three players before the goalkeeper smothered his effort. That would have been an incredible goal.’ The reality was that, on that occasion, Rooney squandered his chance. And after heading United’s simple third minute opener from a Patrice Evra cross, he often struggled as Albion hit back through James Morrison. Ferguson, aware also of the importance In fact, Rooney looked barely able to run — let alone jump — at the end of what Ferguson described as ‘a massive win for us’. The England star had insisted on returning to the field, apparently against the judgment of United’s medical team, and limping through the closing With Rooney’s fitness for the Premier League visit of Stoke on Tuesday in doubt, Ferguson praised his striker’s ‘courage’ in returning to the field after Chris Brunt’s challenge looked to have finished the United man’s game. ![]() Happy days: Rooney celebrates his early goal ‘Our doctor thought he’d be out for a couple of weeks but he came back on,’ said Ferguson. ‘He showed courage. I thought his performance was world class.’ West Bromwich manager Roberto Di Matteo was seething after his team were denied a first-half ![]() Nothing doing: Referee Chris Foy sees nothing wrong in Neville's tackle on West Brom's Graham Dorrans ‘It was a goalscoring opportunity — and everyone saw that it was a penalty except the referee,’ said Di Matteo. ‘That would have changed the game completely.’ Ferguson agreed that it should have been a penalty and a red card, adding: ‘Gary was lucky to stay on.’ Rooney sent in the crucial corner for United’s second-half winner, a header from Javier Hernandez. By then, Albion striker Peter Odemwingie had missed the penalty they were awarded by referee Chris Foy, for Rio Ferdinand’s trip on Jerome Thomas. ![]() Punishment: Ferdinand celebrates with Hernandez (right) after the Mexican's decisive goal Ferguson referred to his own reputation when he was asked about Manchester City assistant Brian Kidd’s recent claim that the title was United’s to lose. ‘If he’s playing mind games, I think he is playing the wrong guy,’ said Sir Alex. The master of mind games has always been Ferguson — as he proved again in his exultation of

If Rooney's performance was "world class" and "out of this world", then I wouldn't be wrong in saying that Gary Neville put in a great performance and can still play at the highest level for many more years. Just to lift the old man's confidence. - Bentley, London, 02/1/2011 11:08 I watched this game live on TV, and Man U were terrible, very lucky to get 3 points. They yet again have a decision go their way, as clearly Neville should have been red carded and a penalty given to WBA. Man U have resumed their mouthing off at officials again, or have they never stopped? Mr Foy will be added to Sir Alex's Christmas card list for 2011 along with Mr Clattenberg, no he has been on Sir Alex list for some years now. - Robert , Portsmouth, UK, 02/1/2011 10:55 Fergie should have let Rooney go when the player wanted out. But pride and ego for the scotsman would not allow that. Instead he brought the whole affair into the open when he felt the need to wash dirty linen in public about it. Fergie went on to work out a huge pay rise for the player and now he will be stuck with a player who is NOT world class. Sorry but to claim someone is world class, it has to show game after game. The man missed an open penalty in a previous game. WORLDCLASS? I think age is making Fergie delusional. Fergie is paying way too much for Rooney when that extra money could have been spent on paying for new players. In Fact MU would be better off without Rooney there and in his place, the money could be spent on 3 good players. Rooney is fit for some 2nd division team. What a waste of space and way over hyped. - mutal bilah, uk, 02/1/2011 10:35 The only thing out of this world was the decision that not for the first time allowed Gary Neville to stay on the park following a very poor tackle. A total disgrace that as usual is covered up by saying that following this incident the referee went on to make further errors. As is usual though Manure got the rub of the green and went on to win. I did note that Sir Alex had very little to say about the incident. - Bill , Brighton, 02/1/2011 09:43 He is a bit over the top with his praise of Rooney - but lets face it folks - it makes a change from him moaning!!!!!!!!!!!!! - john kime, england, 02/1/2011 09:19 Furthermore - I am sure Rooney was trying to head the ball down towards Berbatov and ACCIDENTALLY scored . Thank you for stating what others fear to - namely that Rooney has been over-hyped for a long time now. I am a United fan by the way. - LORD RASCALLY, RASCALS MANOR, 02/1/2011 09:18 The views expressed in the contents above are those of our users and do not necessarily reflect the views of MailOnline.
